Programme Note

No writer has inspired more music. Shakespeare's lyric poetry has been explored by countless composers and this programme explores some of the most memorable settings of all, some familiar, some rare. From the simple beauty of Elizabethan airs to the 'rich and strange' music of Tippett, 'touches of sweet harmony' here evoke the worlds of Shakespeare's clowns, kings, fairies, servants and lovers.
