Programme Note

Strauss had a life-long love for female voices. In opera, he brought a gallery of powerful heroines to the stage. In life, his greatest bond was with his fiery wife, the soprano Pauline de Ahna, who was in every sense a diva. In song, he explores the beauty, complexity, glamour and variety of the soprano voice like no other composer. This programme journeys through Strauss's life, from his first song, composed aged six, to the Four Last Songs, where he takes his leave of the sensual world with the question 'Is this perhaps death?' and culminates in the sublime trio from Der Rosenkavalier, which he requested should be performed at his funeral.
