Programme Note

Stephen Hough is one of the finest pianists of his age. His playing combines a formidable virtuosity with delicacy and profound intimacy. A celebrated polymath, he is also a renowned writer, composer and artist. His programme opens with Alan Rawsthorne’s four short Bagatelles which were written for Hough’s teacher Gordon Green. Hough’s recently composed Partita follows one of the best-loved works in the romantic repertoire, Schumann’s Kreisleriana, and the concert closes with a selection of pieces by Chopin which beautifully demonstrates Hough’s ability to masterly integrate lyrical episodes with moments of frenzied virtuosity.

‘The most perfect piano playing conceivable’ (The Guardian)
