Programme Note

Taking its title from the highlight of the concert, the World Première of Edgar Bainton’s ‘To the Name above Every Name’, this grand repertoire includes rich and evocative liturgical works such as Edward Bairstow’s ‘Heavenly City, Blessed Salem.’

The première itself is the last of Bainton’s choral works, completed in 1928 for vocal score but left unorchestrated. ‘To the Name’ is a setting of a poem by the metaphysical and Anglican divine Richard Crashaw (c.1612-1649), whose writings gained popularity amongst Bainton’s contemporaries, including Vaughan Williams, Finzi and Bax.
