Programme Note
This concert focuses on the formidable Sonatinas of John Ireland, Alan Rawsthorne, and Doreen Carwithen: a neo-classical genre that evolved from elementary forms of the Sonata that acted as pedagogical tools. These pieces will showcase the sophistication of the Sonatina form, and the uniquely English synthesis of structural clarity and underlying pastoral warmth that British composers developed through it in the twentieth century. Also featured are gorgeous Preludes, including an opening one by John Ireland, and one of Cecil Armstrong Gibbs' significant piano works, Lakeland Pictures: a collection of eight Preludes from 1940.
