Programme Note

John Foulds’ Caprice Pompadour, 1916, will captivate the audience as it depicts a legendary scene: a phantasmagorical violin recital by Paganini, as depicted in Heinrich Heine’s unfinished novel Florentine Nights. Alan Rawsthorne’s Theme and Variations in A minor is drawn from an unpublished 1933/34 sonata. Nearly a century since it was written, this EMF will bring to light the unheard half of this sonata, which for too long has been unknown.
