Programme Note
The Swedish soprano Jenny Lind (1820–1887) was one of the most celebrated singers of all time and a close friend of innumerable composers, artists and writers, including the Schumanns, Felix Mendelssohn, Chopin, Berlioz, Meyerbeer and Hans Christian Andersen. She settled in London and taught at the Royal College of Music. Camilla Tilling, who was a recipient of the Jenny Lind Scholarship at the outset of her own illustrious career, and pianist Paul Rivinius present songs by Schumann, Chopin and Mendelssohn in celebration of this astonishing artist, known as ‘The Swedish Nightingale’.
To begin the evening, Emerging Artists Jia Huang and Satoshi Kubo perform 'Letters from Home' by Alex Ho, Oxford Lieder’s newly appointed Associate Composer, ahead of the premiere tomorrow of Alex’s Festival commission (see Event 59).
Generously supported by Nigel & Griselda Hamway.
