Programme Note

This year marks the centenary of the death of the great American writer Henry James, who visited and fell in love with Italy at the age of 26.

As this evening’s Prom features Mendelssohn’s ‘Italian’ Symphony, novelist and Henry James expert Philip Hensher takes the opportunity to reflect on his writing.

Edited version broadcast on BBC Radio 3 during tonight’s interval
