Add to my Calendar 11-03-2023 19:00 11-03-2023 21:00 36 University Symphony Orchestra Following a string of sold-out concerts, University Symphony Orchestra returns with one of the most romantic orchestral pieces ever written! Rachmaninoff began work on his Second Symphony shortly after he moved to Dresden in 1906 to escape the political turmoil in Russia at the time. In contrast to the disastrous premiere of his First Symphony over a decade earlier, the first performance of his Second Symphony in St Petersburg in January 1903 was enthusiastically received. With its rich orchestral colours, luscious textures and abundance of melodies, it is easy to see why it has become one of Rachmaninoff's most popular works. The programme also features the UK Premiere of Oceans by Icelandic composer-violinist María Huld Markan Sigfúsdóttir and what is possibly the first performance of a new edition of Nadia Boulanger’s Fantaisie variée for piano and orchestra with third-year student Laura Mitchell as the soloist.
