Programme Note
Compared to the Beaux Arts Trio for their blend of ‘precision and musical fire’ (Washington Post), the Gould Piano Trio has been at the forefront of the international chamber music scene for 25 years. Written in memory of his close friend the Russian pianist Nikolai Rubinstein, Tchaikovsky’s Piano Trio is a masterpiece of the genre and is notable for its virtuosity and symphonic scale. Judith Weir’s Piano Trio takes inspiration from Schubert's Gondelfahrer and the coastal scenery of the Hebrides and illustrates her ability to ‘distil musical and dramatic ideas to their essences’ (The Guardian). Premiered shortly before her sudden death in 1847, Fanny Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio takes the listener on a journey from its restless and melancholy opening to its triumphant conclusion in D major.
