Programme Note
Renowned British pianist Leon McCawley explores the development of the piano sonata during the Classical era in works by three of the most well-known composers from the period. Mozart’s wistful and dramatic Piano Sonata no. 12 is one of his most technically challenging for the instrument. Beethoven’s impassioned and lyrical two-movement Piano Sonata in E minor sits between the composer’s middle and late periods. Schubert’s Last Piano Sonata, which he completed just two months before his death in 1828, has an ethereal quality as if the composer is communicating with the listener from beyond the grave. The programme also features Bach’s sublime Italian Concerto!
