Programme Note

Internationally acclaimed contemporary music group Ensemble intercontemporain was founded by Pierre Boulez in 1976. The Ensemble’s 31 soloists share a passion for twentieth- and twenty-first-century music and run various education projects for children and students across the world. The Ensemble’s residency at the University of York this year, comprising concerts, workshops and masterclasses, culminates in a performance of some of York-based composer Thomas Simaku’s most recent works, characteristic of his sound inventions (or KLANG Inventions as he calls them). Soliloquy VII involves a virtuoso clarinettist using a piano as a megaphone and effects amplifier, and ENgREnage, for violin and piano, explores the interplay between starkly contrasting musical elements and the various meanings of the French word engrenage (‘gear’).
