Programme Note

We welcome the City of Oxford Choir to the Autumn Series with this programme exploring the English choral tradition's fine repertoire of anthems. Tonight's concert features works spanning the centuries, from Byrd and Tomkins in the Renaissance to James MacMillan and Jonathan Dove in the present day. The remarkable contribution made by English composers in the first half of the twentieth century is particularly well represented, with offerings from Bairstow, Elgar, Harris, Howells and Wesley, as well as perhaps the most famous work on the programme, Parry's dramatic I was glad. Join us in the beautiful and historic Wren church of St Mary-le-Bow.
