Programme Note

Eminent Russian pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja returns for her second Prom this season, joining the Emerson String Quartet for its Proms debut in a programme of great chamber works of the 20th century. From France, there’s Debussy’s ‘Feux d’artifice’ - a display of technical and aural fireworks for solo piano. From the Emerson’s native America there’s the original string quartet version of Barber’s hauntingly beautiful Adagio for strings, and Russia is represented by Shostakovich’s popular Quintet, with its darkly comic Scherzo and meditative, delicately melancholy Intermezzo.

There will be no interval
