Programme Note
Veteran conductor Charles Dutoit takes up an Italian theme with Berlioz’s intoxicating Roman Carnival overture and Respighi’s Roman trilogy.
Rarely heard in full, this triptych of flamboyant orchestral showpieces paints a vivid picture of life in the ‘Eternal City’. Respighi takes us down into the catacombs where plainchant fills the air, through the streets where children play, and we watch as the sun rises and sets over the city’s seven hills.
Danny Driver joins the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra as soloist in Walton’s early Sinfonia concertante - a piano concerto in all but name.
